Unpopular Opinions Strongly Held

“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” ― Oscar Wilde.pngFor those of you who have the distinct pleasure of knowing me either in real life or on other social media platforms, I am lovingly known as The Prince of Unpopular Opinions. I got this nickname a few years ago when I was “brave” enough to say the things I really feel. I take the title seriously, any opinion I have is rooted in an at least base understanding of the piece. So I’m seldom a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian.

So in the spirit of being the Awesome Me, I wanted to go over a few unpopular opinions. A friend of mine threw out the number 33 so let’s get there! These will be sort of hot-takes, I may got into detail on some but if you want further explanations, leave me a comment! I will answer! Also due to the nature of these sorts of things…spoilers for some stuff, probably.

    1. I don’t like The Dark Knight. I know, shocker. I’m not crazy about Heath Ledger’s Joker. He was great in that movie! Just when your lore base is Batman The Animated Series, his Joker is a departure. The rest of the movie was a bit of a slog and I’m all for gritty reimaginings but Batman was always pretty gritty if you ignore the campy 1960s.
    2. I really like dubbed anime. I use anime as background noise a lot. I often don’t have time to entirely give my attention to a thing. Also, my time coming into anime was during the Golden Age of Dubbing. I had AMAZING voice acting experiences with English dubs. Now, there are some that are hot garbage, but for the most part, gimme a good dub.
    3. Cadbury Creme Eggs are magical. Fight me.
    4. Peeps are also magical. Continue to fight me.
    5. I dislike Attack on Titan. Mostly, I dislike the anime’s fandom. If I wanted to watch a lesser version of Evangelion, I’d just watch the movies.
    6. Tumblr is a place that I intensely dislike in places but I also refuse to leave it.
    7. I really like the original run of Fullmetal Alchemist. Brotherhood is closer to the manga, sure, but it changed things that vastly changed how I related to the story.
    8. Gravitation is a garbage anime but I will fight people over it. That series was probably one of the most important things to me as a troubled youth.
    9. I really liked it when Blink 182 and Green Day went emo in the 2000s. Those are probably some of my favorite albums and I still listen to them. A lot of folks who listened to those bands when they were still grunge hated the transition to emo but I was just a little too young for the grunge days and I was a moody teen during the emo days. Doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the older stuff, I just really emotionally jived with the emotional moaning of Tom DeLonge.
    10. I don’t like wearing high heels. God made me short.
    11. Naruto shouldn’t have ended up with Hinata. She deserved better.
    12. ICHIGO AND RUKIA SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE MAIN PAIRING IN BLEACH.
    13. Paris Franz was the worst part of the animated The Killing Joke movie. And hell, the rest of the movie was fine even though I can fully admit that it’s an old story that just doesn’t work in the modern era.
    14. I don’t understand Modern Art. It’s been explained to me. I’ve taken art classes. I just don’t get it.
    15. I don’t hate Justin Bieber’s newer songs. Don’t @ me.
    16. I don’t like Chipotle. I more or less just don’t understand what niche it fills. That being said, I still go because it’s downtown and it’s close and it’s there. I’m not proud of myself.
    17. Bianca del Rio is my least favorite RuPaul’s Drag Race winner. But I won’t say that too loud. She can hear me and feeds upon my fear.
    18. I am not crazy about JRPGs. I love the story of many of them like the Persona series but you could not pay me to play those games. The grind exhausts me.That being said I will absolutely still cosplay as Teddie and Yusuke.
    19. Commonly said unpopular opinion: Yuri On Ice ruined anime and even though I hate it a lot less, I still will forever be disappointed at what it did for the discourse.
    20. I’m pretty over Steven Universe. I think that show can just end now. It had a good run. I also for some reason really dislike how Rebecca Sugar uses references sometimes. I’m not sure why. It may be totally irrational but for some reason when she obviously parodies something it just makes my blood boil.
    21. I don’t hate the Star Wars prequels. Hell, I still have my ticket stub for Revenge of the Sith. I can admit they are bad movies but dammit those lightsaber battles.
    22. Not crazy about the new Star Wars trilogy. Rey is an aggressive Mary Sue and it does feel like an intense re-tread of older things. That being said, porgs are great: fight me.
    23. Ewoks scare the hell out of me. They clearly eat people and have weird human teeth.
    24. I will happily watch baseball over football.
    25. French fries are made to be dipped in a chocolate frosty.
    26. Vanilla frosties are an abomination unto the Lord.
    27. I still play Pokemon Go. Team Mystic forever.
    28. Harry Potter is a fantastic universe and franchise but dammit Jo Rowling exhausts me and I am bored to tears with her mains. Thus says a proud Slytherin.
    29. Also, I will holler this on the top of a mountain: I WANT MY DAMN MARAUDERS MOVIE.
    30. Justice League: Gods and Monsters may be one of my favorite animated superhero movie. Vampire Batman forever.
    31. I’m weirdly bored of Marvel movies. They have a time and a half balancing humor and seriousness and everyone being a quip monster is starting to wear on me. That may explain why I’m tired of Guardians of the Galaxy and Spiderman as franchises.
    32. The Sam Raimi Spiderman does not get enough credit and it’s wonderful. Spiderman 2 may be one of the greatest comic book movies ever made.
    33. I don’t like Frozen. The collective pop cultural subconscious can absolutely Let it Go.

That was a fun little exercise wasn’t it? Did you learn a lot about me? Good.

Let’s do this again sometime!

Thoughts from A-Kon 28

-This entire weekend has just been me complaining about Yuri on Ice, making pterodactyl noises and non-sexual grunts and running away from my problems.--Said in the Hotel during A-Kon 28.png

It’s always surprising how I feel leaving convention. Sometimes I’m excited to get back on the road and return home and sometimes I never want the weekend to end. Here are the thoughts and feelings I had before, during and after A-Kon 28.

  • I for sure don’t mind the 4 hour drive so much when I get to take breaks.
  • Sometimes hotel breakfast is a trap.
    • No, seriously. Carlos and I were both super sick after hotel breakfast and we didn’t eat it again. And we all know how seriously I take hotel free breakfast so this was very disappointing to me.
  • There’s nothing quite like seeing your ex check into the same hotel you’re staying in.
    • Especially if you didn’t break up with that person on good terms.
      • No seriously, it was a huge emotional burden dealing with those feelings and seeing this person over and over again after such a painful break up was difficult to say delicately.
  • Gen Korean BBQ is still an amazing place.
    • And I get all the banchan since Carlos doesn’t like it.
  • Daiso is still the most magical place I’ve ever been to and they have fantastic candy.
    • No, really. I got 5 bags of apple gummies. Please send more apple gummies.
  • 85C may replace Mozart Bakery as my go-to place for breads.
    • Please don’t tell Mozart. I can’t have them know I cheated on them.
  • Bringing in stuff for a care package reminds me of how extra of a friend I am.
    • I made the boys (Carlos and Ricky) a mix-tape and badges for their service.
      • That’s right, reader. I made a damn mix-tape.
  • After the last few hotels rooms that gave me my own bedroom and bathroom, I’ve grown spoiled to that.
    • I’ve also grown spoiled to having a kitchen.
      • I love Carlos to death as a friend but I need my own bedroom.
        • He snores.
  • I found out about Adam West’s death while at Kirin Court with Carlos and it really messed me up for days.
  • So real talk, I hated A-Kon’s new layout.
    • Ft.Worth is not Dallas. Parking was a nightmare. Finding food was  nightmare and walking even a half a mile in costume while bound, padded, in a wig and in a heavy layered costume is a miserable sort of hell. And spreading it around 3 hotels made the organic fun of “falling” into a place out of the question. We had to plan everything because everything was blocks away. Nothing could be spontaneous. And all the things Carlos and I do, our traditions,  were so far away we could barely enjoy them. Normally 10-20 minute drives because 45 minutes to 1 hour long slogs across I-20. That really ruined some of my fun during this convention.
  • Less jokey panels are fun but interesting.
    • Normally, I’d never try a new panel at such a big con but it was important to me. 150 people saw me over 2 days and I’m proud of them. I got many compliments and people seemed engaged. Now I can workshop them better and be a better panelist. That’s how I grow.
  • It’s difficult being surrounded by media pieces you don’t like.
    • I still dislike YoI and it was everywhere. Literally. And it did upset me once or twice. But the hatred did dull after day 2 of seeing poorly-dressed Victors running around.
      • Fun fact though: I feel really tsundere about YoI because I should love this series and I did finish it but the fandom..god, the fandom hurts me.
  • Really this whole con was just about things that were popular: it was Zeitgeist the Convention.
    • Maybe that isn’t all bad.
  • The 90s Dance Music channel on Amazon Prime music was fire!
    • Nothing like Carlos and I dancing and singing to Barbie Girl.
      • Don’t judge us.
  • I do love cosplayers of all kinds, shapes and sizes but I’ll always rail against shake and go cosplay. Details are wonderful and they make me so happy as a fangirl and cosplayer. I do sometimes wish people cared a little more about these details sometimes but I’m from a different era of cosplay
  • I’m really shaken by the lack of routine we were able to have at this con with it being in Ft. Worth.
    • I’m still disappointed in this days later.
  • I’m upset I didn’t get my tea and cake after a good panel.
    • I did get ice cream, though.
  • I realize now having lived in San Antonio for some years that I seriously miss Taco Bueno and Chicken Express.
  • I’m disappointed in myself that I let people take my joy away.
  • However, Carlos did learn that you can easily melt my heart with a Rowlet.
    • No seriously, I freaked out over my sweet birb son.
  • I worry a lot about Carlos and I as friends.
    • We’re very different in nearly every way and sometimes I wonder why we’re friends and what can come of it. And then he’ll say “Let’s play DDR. I know you like that.” and I’m less worried.
  • Apparently, every Free! cosplayer was at the literal pool at convention.
    • I regret not visiting that pool.
  • I’m realizing that I’m not a huge fan of official merch and I much rather spend my money on original art pieces.
  • RuPaul’s Drag Race is one of the few things Carlos and I can agree on so we literally watched that all weekend.
  • Sometimes, you wear so much highlighter that you get compliments about it.
    • No really, Carlos has never seen me with that much makeup on and I loved living my best Farrah Moan fantasy.
  • There’s nothing like meeting webcomic artists that you follow.
    • Special thank you to Rem of Devil’s Candy and Ru of Saint for Rent and letting me squee over them so much.
  • If a hand fetishist asks for your gloves, do not let him take them for free.
    • Try to auction them off for $50.
      • Then immediately take them off and feel dirty for the rest of the day.
  • Somehow, it’s impossible to run from the things you want to avoid. They will always find you.
  • Sometimes, being the bigger man isn’t rewarding but it’s necessary.
  • I do still love being able to come down from the stage and talk to people. Answering questions is amazing.

I have so many feelings about this A-Kon. I cried in the parking lot for several minutes before driving away and my music choices after driving away didn’t help (I got KanshaBrothers and Wind back to back and I couldn’t help but be emotional, don’t judge me.). Normally the last day of con is a ceremony. There’s cake, there’s tea, there’s time with a friend I only see a few times a year. This time, he had to go to work and I had to drive back home. We didn’t get to live our traditions. We didn’t get to claim the time we had. I let my emotions get to me and that I’m not proud of. But for every moment of being annoyed by poor cosplay choices there were four or five that I loved being able to spend time with friends, fans and idols. A-Kon and conventions are my bread and butter. They’re my life. And I’m glad I went even if it was less than perfect.

Thank you for all of those that saw my panels, asked me questions, asked me for photos, let me take photos of you and all the delicious food I ate and all the fun memories I did make.

See you next year.

Thoughts and Musings on RuPaul’s Drag Race

-We're all Born Naked and the Rest is Drag.-RuPaul.pngIt’s no secret that I love RuPaul’s Drag Race. It’s no secret that I love pride communities, the LGBTQ family and the pageantry and pain that goes alongside being a drag queen. So with season 9 just around the corner (or already going depending on quickly my chubby fingers finish this post up), here’s some of the thoughts I have after 9 seasons of Drag Race, 2 seasons of Drag Race: All-Stars and drag culture in general. Now, these opinions are mine and I welcome constructive conversation down in the comments.

  • I love that RuPaul has built an empire on blonde wigs and raising one arm up in the air.
  • Teaching and learning Drag Lingo is absolutely hilarious.
    • Listening to your friends use it casually in conversation is also great.
      • Lookin’ at you, Carlos. Askin’ me about the tea.
  • Apparently, I pull off a mean Alaska impression.
  • Can we just say that Katya was robbed during All-Stars Season 2?
    • Speaking of Katya, I’d like to think I’m the Katya Zamo of cosplay.
      • Mostly riddled with anxiety but still looking pretty okay.
  • Can we all just say that Raven has been robbed twice?
  • ALSO can we just say that making Raven and JuJu Bee sing against each other to Dancing On my Own was the purest show of evil?
    • My heart still isn’t fully mended from that.
  • Latrice Royale is wonderful and really should have won some kind of crown. I don’t think she was best of her season but someone deserves to give her a crown of some kind.
    • LARGE AND IN CHARGE, DAMMIT. GIVE HER A CROWN.
  • I get just as  angry as Latrice did when the girls of her season for WHATEVER reason didn’t know their herstory.
    • Real talk, I was talking to some other members of the pride community and some young lass asked “What was Stonewall all about?” and I just about spilled my drink.
  • I really want to know what happened to Ginger Minj and her husband in between her season and the most recent season of All-Stars…
    • Her new beau is cute but like…there’s a story there. I want to know that story.
  • Willam is a strange conglomeration of regret and bad choices but like…he looks good.
    • Real talk, if you ever want to see me feel very conflicted about a person Willam is fascinating. He does things FOR attention so you know what you’re getting but also, you can see this is a person who somewhere deep down inside is in pain and probably needs a lot of love and support.
  • RELATED TANGENT: how does one gender a drag queen?
    • He when dressed and as a male and she as a female?
      • But yet Ru is still called Mama even when in a bespoke suit…
  • Also let’s go over a few things that drag ISN’T:
    • Drag is not cosplay.
    • Drag is not just a man in a dress.
    • Drag is not just doing fierce makeup.
    • Drag is pads and nails and wigs and discomfort and beauty.
    • IF YOU’RE NOT WEARING NAILS, YOU AREN’T DOING DRAG.
      • Moral of the story is: Drag is an Art.
  • I’m always a little struck by the misogyny that the gay community still struggles with.
    • Like really, listen to the way these men talk about women sometimes.
  • Cosplay still isn’t drag.
  • The divide between older drag queens and younger queens reminds me so much of the divide between new cosplayers and old cosplayers (like me).
    • Oh my gosh, I made this whole outfit myself! No, you didn’t. You got it off J-List. That’s cool, girl. No tea, no shade. Just accept the truth.
  • Why did no one tell me that Chad Michaels and Morgan McMichaels (drag mom and daughter) are the same damn age?
  • I’m surprised by how many of these drag queens have last names.
    • Looking at you, Pearl Liason.
  • I do love and hate the divide between comedy queens and pageant girls.
  • I still don’t think I understand Sharon Needles. I’m just gonna say it.
  • I also still hate Phi Phi O’Hara.
    • There is nothing quite like watching me downward spiral into hatred when being confronted with how awful of a human being or rotted out tree monster Phi Phi O’Hara is.
  • If Coco Montrese can forgive Alyssa and vice versa, I can learn to be more forgiving.
  • Every time Alyssa does a Death Drop, Redbull does give someone wings.
    • But Redbull does give you back rolls.
  • Does Violet eat? Such a tiny waist. Tiny corset…is she okay? Someone give her a burger.
  • Watching this show genuinely makes me want to be a better cosplayer, person and artist.
  • I want to know who my drag mom would be. Who would drag adopt me?
    • Latrice, please adopt me. Or Katya.
  • Please don’t ask me who my favorite queen is…it’s Chad Michaels or Katya.
  • I still don’t get Bianca Del Rio…she’s so mean.
    • Please don’t tell her I said that. She will hunt me down like an animal and read me to filth.
  • Snatch Game is magical and I have no idea who I would be…
    • Except for the instances where it’s damn near offensive…
      • LOOKIN’ AT YOU TRIXIE MATTEL. TRYIN’ TO BE ANNE FRANK FOR SNATCH GAME.
  • RuPaul’s music is very catchy…too catchy….
    • If you have to ask me a favorite RuPaul song…The Beginning is really really good.
  • I am curious about the fine line between reading and just being a terrible human being.
  • I am also disappointed with how staged the show has been recently.
    • If I wanted a staged reality show, I’d watch something Kardashian or America’s Next Top Model.
  • Favorite Season? Season 4, probably. Or Season 7. Don’t make me choose.
  • I’m a little curious about the nature of the terrible horrible f*g word. Because when Willam uses it, he’s fine but if someone else uses it, they’re using hate speech. I think it’s hate speech either way.
    • I’m seriously curious about this. It’s sort of like the n-word. That if someone who is WHITE says it, it’s hate speech. If two black people say it to each other, it’s fine.
  • I would love to see a Drag King version of Drag Race but I do admit that most biological women who are dressing as men are doing to express gender identity and not just for fun and remember: cosplay is not drag.
  • I am also angry that these men in dresses look better than I do on most days and that’s a strange feeling to have as a real human person.

I love any show that makes me want to create. That makes me want to be more. That makes me want to be a better person, creator and queen. The messages can be empowering, self-satisfying and at the same time narcissistic and toxic. But isn’t that any community? Isn’t that any fandom? The LGBT community has come so far and drag has been pivotal to that growth. But the community does still have a long way to go and we will continue to make progress. Let’s move forward together and make herstory.
